Apple’s AirTag 2 appears to be on the verge of release, with multiple indicators pointing to a launch in the coming weeks. The strongest hint yet comes from the disappearance of the AirTag Loop accessory from Apple’s online store, a move that typically precedes the introduction of an updated product line.
The original AirTag debuted in April 2021 alongside the M1 iMac and an updated Apple TV 4K. After a four-year cycle, Apple is now reportedly preparing to unveil its next-generation item tracker. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman first reported last year that a new AirTag would arrive around mid-2025, while leaker Kosutami recently narrowed the window to May or June of this year. The timing coincides with Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, which has historically been a platform for hardware announcements alongside software updates.
What to Expect From AirTag 2
The AirTag 2 is rumored to include meaningful upgrades, most notably a second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip—the same one found in the iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. This upgrade is expected to significantly extend tracking range, with Precision Finding potentially working up to 200 feet (60 meters) away, compared to the current model’s more limited scope.
Safety improvements have also been a focus, particularly in response to concerns about stalkers misusing the original AirTag. A new tamper-proof speaker could make unwanted tracking more difficult. Additionally, improved Vision Pro integration hints at spatial computing possibilities, though exact details remain unclear.
Despite these internal advancements, the AirTag 2 is not expected to undergo major design changes, retaining the compact, circular form factor of its predecessor.
Pricing and Availability
Apple has not disclosed AirTag 2 pricing, but the original model retails for $29 for a single unit and $99 for a four-pack. Given Apple’s pricing consistency with similar accessories, the new version will likely stay in the same range, though manufacturing costs and upgraded components could influence slight adjustments.
With WWDC 2025 scheduled for June, and the AirTag Loop already removed from Apple’s store, the AirTag 2 announcement appears imminent—potentially just weeks away. Whether it debuts at WWDC or as a standalone reveal, all signs suggest Apple is finalizing its next-generation tracking device.
